Interpersonal Communication And Relationship Enhancement (I*CARE)
Culturally Competent Care
Introduction
Time: 01:40

Hello. I'm Dr. Harry Gibbs, Chief Diversity Officer at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The elimination of cancer disparities is one of the overarching themes of the American Cancer Society challenge goals. Recent statistics show that cancer disproportionately affects minority communities in the United States. In addition, increasing representation of diverse populations in research is critical. As physicians discover the many causes of healthcare disparities that affect our multicultural patient population, trust has become an important area for further inquiry and improvement. Because trust is at the heart of every successful physician-patient relationship, Building Trust Across Cultures was designed to illustrate challenges of cross-cultural communication you may face, provide learning resources to meet these opportunities, and offer solutions to address the goal of eliminating health care disparities.

To begin our discussion, we must recognize the impact of culture on the patient-physician relationship, and understand how cultural competence builds trust and improves communication. This module is designed to help enhance your skills in cross cultural communication. To be culturally competent means to be capable of working effectively in these situations. This requires congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies targeted at meeting patients' needs.
